Jonathan was born in 1764 to John McCrary and Jane Greer. He was probably born in the 96th District, a part of what is now Laurens County, formed in 1785. He may have had at least 4 siblings: Lettice, Matthew, Bartley, and Isaac.
Jonathan moved his family from South Carolina to Baldwin County, Georgia. They relocated near the home of his brother, Bartley.

He passed away in 1809 at about the age of 45. It is not known where he is buried.
Fact: Death Notice (28 Jan 1809) Augusta Chronicle: Jonathan McCreery got into a fight on the evening of 22 Jan 1809 and died from head wounds several hours later on the morning of 23 Jan 1809. Elisha Gore was jailed in Sandersville to await trial.

Jonathan McCrary was killed on 24 Jan 1809 in a fight with his neighbor and it was reported in an Augusta newspaper.
