Biography

WILLIAM BUCK McCRAW was born circa 1788, probably in Surry County, North Carolina, to Francis Marion McCraw and Sarah "Sally" Burris.[1] He died in early 1859 in Virginia or North Carolina. He lived near the border of the two states and possibly owned land in both Surry County, NC and Carroll (formerly Patrick) County, VA. Because there are records related to the settlement of his estate in NC, it might be that he sold his VA land prior to his death and moved in with family members living in NC for his final years.

On 13 Jan 1816, he married Sabrina Ahart in Patrick County, Virginia.[2] They first appear on the US Census there in 1820[3] with two sons under 10 years old. A William McCraw is listed as head of household in Grayson County, Virginia in the 1830[4] and 1840 censuses. These records list 6 sons: 2 born 1815-20, 1 born about 1820, 2 born 1821-25 and one born 1826-30. The 1850 census in Carroll County, VA, has a William McCraw, aged 62 and Sabrinay, aged 67. [5] The children of William "Buck" McCraw and Sabrina Ehrhart were:

  1. Adam Jefferson McCraw, m Francis Mahala Snow[6]
  2. Jacob Warren "Jake" McCraw, m Nancy Adeline Spencer[7]
  3. William Roll "Wink" McCraw, m Rosanna Rose Branscom[8]
  4. Francis Marion McCraw, m Nancy Buckley[9]
  5. James "Jim" McCraw, m Sarah Golding[10]
  6. Mordicai H. McCraw, m Nancy Golding[11]
  7. Sarah Elizabeth McCraw, m Wiley Vernon[12]

William McCraw is named (first) as a son of Francis McCraw in the latter's American Revolution pension records and a chancery suit of the 1860's names William McCraw, deceased, as a son of Francis McCraw. The chancery suit further lists the above named children as the heirs of William McCraw. There is an estate file for William McCraw in Surry County (now lodged in the Archives, Raleigh, NC) dated 20 June 1859, containing a document of this date which is an agreement of the heirs-at-law of William McCraw, deceased, late of Surry Co, NC, formerly of Carroll County, VA, who died intestate. The agreement is signed by Wiley Vernon, James W. (x) McCraw, Mordicai H. (x) McCraw, W. Roll (x) McCraw, Jacob W. McCraw, F.M. (x) McCraw, and Forester Booker. The persons appointed to divide the estate are Jacob W. McCraw, F. M. McCraw and "F. Booker, guardian for Wm. J. McCraw."
