Biography

It is presumed with strong evidence, but not proven, that this Samuel McCraw was the son of Benjamin Abind McCraw, the son of Pioneer William Maccraw who settled in Virginia in the early/mid 1700s. He and his brothers, Cabraid and Baird, settled in an area of Rutherford County, North Carolina which later became the part of Cleveland County known as the "Number One Township". This geographical area was unique in several way. It was cut off from the rest of the county by the Broad River and thus the residents of "Number One Township" had little contact with the rest of the county. A second side of the township bordered the remaining Rutherford County. The third side of the township bordered Cherokee County, South Carolina, divided only by an imaginary line. The closest town was Gaffney and this was where the "Number One" residents did their shopping and socializing. Researcher, Shirley Garmon, wrote in 1991 that, "No new blood has moved into Number One Township probably since the emigrations of the early 1800s. Even though they actually live in North Carolina, their mailing address is Route 2, Gaffney, South Carolina...."[1] Given this, we might expect to find some inconsistencies in the records about place of birth from residents of this area - could be NC, could be SC.

Samuel married Susannah Tate, probably before 1795. Their known and presumed children were:

  1. James McCraw [prob]
  2. Peggy McCraw
  3. Jesse Samuel McCraw [prob]
  4. Elizabeth McCraw
  5. Benjamin McCraw
  6. Reuben McCraw
  7. Josiah McCraw
  8. Nancy McCraw
  9. Abner Benton McCraw
  10. Lucinda McCraw
  11. female no other information
  12. Willis McCraw
