Biography

Thomas was born 14 August 1743 in Augusta County, Virginia [1]

Family and Property

Apparently, he married Elizabeth Gillespie in Augusta Virginia [2] Thomas McCullough's land (Beverley Manor NE, 80 acres acquired from John, James and William Gillespie (sons of James Gillespie) in 1775) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. [3]

Research Notes

It seems Thomas's family might have arrived at the colonies from Atrium County, the majority of which is Belfast in Northern Ireland. Scots who had a healthy business relationship with the British emigrated to the colonies from Scotland to some arrangement of land as I think happened with the Gillespies from Falkirk. The McCulloughs may have been persecuted Highlanders who fled to Atrium. It looks like they arrived before Augusta County became a colony in 1733. It would be interesting to see if they were frontiersmen who settled in a dangerous Shenandoah Valley.
