Biography

1730

Margaret MCQUOWN was the daughter of James and Isabella STEWART MCQUOWN. She was born about 1734 since Henry, her brother, was born in 1732 and she is named after him in the H. Thomas note that accompanied the family when they sailed for America in 1736.

James and Isabella (Stewart) Mcquown sailed with their family from Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland landing in New Castle, Delaware and then journeying on to Bedminster Twp., Somerset Co., New Jersey.

The parents had a note from their Pastor in Ballybay which mentions Margaret.

[Note: The following certificate was in the possession of Mrs. Charles McBride who was Ann, daughter of Anna and William PETTIT. Anna MCEWEN [MCQUOWN] PETITT was the sister to Francis MCEWEN [MCQUOWN], Senior.]

“Tullycorbet, [Monaghan Co., No. Ireland] May the 19th 1736 The bearer, James McKeun with his wife Isabel and their children, William, Joan, Henry and Margaret McKeun have been orderly members of this congregation, he from his infancy and she from her marriage, still free from all public scandal or church censure and in good repute and now designing to transport themselves with Divine concurrence into some of the Protestant colonies of America, we heartily recommend them to the care and Christian fellowship of any religious society where God’s providence shall order their lot. Certified by H. Thompson, minister.” [1][2]

1750

William CALDWELL married Margaret MCQUOWN about 1753 in Bucks Co., PA.

Notes and Queries William Caldwell b. Oct. 5, 1726; m. Margaret McCune (McQuown of McEwen) (b. in 1734). No dates of death are given. They settled first in the Cumberland Valley, moving to Western Pennsylvania at the beginning of the Revolution. [3]

It is suspected that the William CALDWELL she married is related to the Elizabeth CALDWELL her brother Henry married. If that is true then William CALDWELL was born in County Longford, in the Kingdom of Ireland to Thomas and Jane (COWEN) CALDWELL. Her family came to America in 1747 and settled in Somerset Co., NJ.

William and Margaret (McQuown Caldwell’s children were:

1. Isabel CALDWELL b. 1754 who first married Nathaniel TEMPLETON. About Isabella Caldwell. She was one of the pioneer mothers of the West. She lived to be 104 years of age. Several years of her widowhood were passed with her children on an exposed frontier, where she was often compelled to seek refuge in the block house as protection from the prowling savages. Her second marriage was to Captain William Riddle. She was called “Aunt Libbie” by her relatives. Her children with Nathaniel TEMPLETON were: 1, Margaret, b. Dec. 21, 1777. 2, John, b. April 22, 1779. Nathaniel TEMPLETON was killed in the Sandusky (Crawford’s) expedition of 1782

Isabel next married Capt. William RIDDLE. Her children with William Riddle were:: 1, David, b. March 5, 1785; he was a major in the War of 1812; fell in a duel at Mobile, Alabama. 2. Samuel, b. Sept, 5, 1788; was a lieutenant in the War of 1812; died at Baton Rouge. 3. Thomas, b. July 23, 1790. 4. Abraham, b. 1795. 5. Katherine, b. 1797; d. 1880. [4]

3. James CALDWELL b. 1758. d. 1778

8. Mary CALDWELL b. March 12, 1771 who married Isaac VAN METER March 9, 1797. Isaac was the son of Joseph and Margaret or Drusilla (MORGAN) VAN METER, d. July 4, 1835. Isaac crossed the Ohio into Indiana where all his children except Margaret were born on a farm near Anderson. He finally disposed of his homestead and emigrated with two or three of his brothers to Bourbon Co., Kentucky. Isaac is said to have died near Chesterfield, Madison Co., KY.[5]

On January 1768 William CALDWELL applied for a warrant for 200 acres of land in Antrim Twp., Cumberland Co.., PA adjacent John Stoner and Jacob Ganfs.[12]

NOTE

The following men are not our William CALDWELL as he may moved to Cumberland Co., PA with his in-laws, James MCQUOWN and Isabella STEWART.

The will of William CALDWELL written Oct. 27, 1771 mentions a wife , Elizabeth; children John, William and Joseph CALDWELL and daughters Mary DEMUNS and Elizabeth DEMUND and youngest daughter, Margaret CALDWELL.[13]

REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE COMMENTS

[Note: The Following references to military service pertain to a different William Caldwell who died in Miami, Ohio in 1791; several years after Margaret's husband died in 1787. William would have been too old to serve in the Revolutionary War.] DAR pg. 60 3. John James CALDWELL married Sarah CRAIG 4. William CALDWELL married Margaret MCCUNE (MCQUOWN)

William CALDWELL (1726-1791) ENLISTED IN 1772 as private in the 11th Regiment of Pennsylvania Troops. He was born in Pennsylvania and died in Miami, Ohio. Also No. 104181 [Note: this regiment was raised in the Philadelphia are but also included men from Cumberland Co.]

FINDAGRAVE Record of Burial Place of Veteran

William CALDWELL served in the Revolutionary War from 1778-1783 with the Westmoreland Frontier (Organization); serving as a Ranger (rank); He is buried in Long Run Presbyterian Cemetery, North Huntington Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.

The following information concerns another William CALDWELL.

William CALDWELL fought in the 11 TH Pennsylvania Regiment in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment in 1777 and served as a private. DAR Patriot Index, 1966, pg 109, William Cadwell b. 10/5/1726 d. 11/4/1791 married Margaret McCune Pvt. PA. DAR application makes reference to Vol. 4, 5th Series Pennsylvania Archives, page 177. I have proven to National DAR that this is not when he died.

This DAR information is wrong for several reasons:

William CALDWELL was born around 1726 and would be 50 years old at the start of the War and this was too old for active service, though he would still have belonged to his local militia.

It may be that this is William CALDWELL JR., as he was bot in 1766 and would be 20 years old at the start of the Revolutionary War.

The Regiment was authorized on September 16, 1776 in the Continental Army as the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment. It was assigned on December 27, 1776 to the Main Continental Army. Organized in spring 1777 at Philadelphia to consist of 8 companies from Philadelphia City and Berks, Chester, Philadelphia, Cumberland and Northumberland Counties. The death date of Nov. 4, 1791 does not match William’s death in 1787.

The location of the death in Ohio is also incorrect and William died in Washington Co., PA.

I have a copy of a paper, possibly a will, written by James McEwan and witnessed by William Smiley. James mentions a son, Henry, dtr. Elizabeth Hackett (prob. wife of George) dtrs. Jane Torbett (?) and Margaret Caldwell. The date looks like 1781 and the location was Middleton, Cumberland Co. PA.

There are some similarities with names in my line of McCunes and Caldwells. My ancestor William Caldwell married Margaret McCune, born about 1727 in Cumberland Co. One of their daughters married a Hackett and William was in business with a William Smiley. William and his family were living in Washington Co., PA, when he died in 1787.

“James McEwen died prior to Sept. 22, 1781 apparently in Middleton Twp., Cumberland Co., PA when his will was probated. It was written Sept. 15, 1781 and recorded in Cumberland Co., PA Will book D pp. 52-53. It is quoted below:

In the name of God Amen – I James McEwen of the township of Middleton, County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania being sick and weak of Body but of Perfect Mind and Memory Thanks be to Almighty God for the same Therefore do ordain this my last will and Testament in Manner and form following (Viz) First I recommend my Soul to God ........and my body to be buried in Decent Christian Burial at the Discretion of my Executors and as concerning what worldly substance may remain after Defraying said expense of Burial etc. I Do Ordain it to be divided in manner and form following; Viz “First I give and bequeath to my beloved son Henry McEwen my Silver Watch....; Secondly I do give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Elizabeth Hackett my Feather Bed .. and all my house furniture etc. Furthermore I allow that my mare be sold for cash and my debts collected by my sons Henry McEwen and George Hackett whom I ordain sole executors and after payment of my burial and other charges the remainder shall be Divided in manner following: I bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Hackett the one third part of all my said monies when collected the remaining Two Thirds to be equally divided Between my son Henry McEwen and my daughters Jane Forbett and Margaret Caldwell (or their heirs) And further I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of September 1781.. Signed James (his X mark) McEwen Witnesses: Alexr. Irvine, James Briden, Robt Cunningham..” The estate was inventoried Jan. 7, 1788 and the beneficiaries agreed that their mother, Margaret CALDWELL had disposed of the estate properly. Will Book #1 shows William Caldwell made a will dated 10 April 1787 which was probated 31 December 1787. The will lists his wife, daughters and son. There a number of deeds in the Washington County deed books dealing with the division and selling of Williams land which give more information on the family and the daughter Isabella’s husbands. From the deeds we know that William left land in Hopewell Township and the original tract was for 399 7/8 acres. He had obtained a Patent on the land on the 11 September 1786 and it is listed in Patent Book No 6. page 444.[16]

I really do not believe this woman was the mother of my ancestor Mary Caldwell VanMeter. Noland 588.

Another comment. I also read that Isaac and Mary went to Bourbon Co., KY, but could find nothing on him there. He actually went to a couple of counties in the lower part of Ohio, along with some brothers. My ancestor Mary Ann, was born in Fayette Co., IN, where Isaac and Mary moved after Ohio. Isaac was said to have hanged himself (due to brain fever) on July 4, 1835. He is buried in Madison County, IN. Noland 588.

Hello Linda,

I hope you are adding this information on Wikitree as I have my hands full just getting the McEwen names added. I try to get the children of all the McEwen family entered, but there are so many, I have to stop there.

Stephen Guthrie's address is 6005 Charing St., San Diego, CA 92117 and his Email is: SGenealogy=at=hotmail.com

The McEwen book is available for download at the LDS site Family Search.

You might also look up property records at the BLM (Bureau of Land Management ) site as it contains the first purchasers of property in states west of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Archives has Warrant Registers and Surveys for their land.

Good luck with your research.

Cordially, Bruce McEwen

I was in touch with Stephen Guthrie yeas ago. I have not added the information on WikiTree, since they want to combine information. You have done so much more research on these people than I have. At my age (84) my research is now on the computer. I will check into the McEwen book; THANKS.

I am a descendant of Mary Caldwell and Isaac VanMeter. I believe his parents were Joseph VanMeter and Margaret VanMeter (his cousin). She was the daughter of Isaac and Alice (Scholl) VanMeter. Her father died when she was young and her mother married a Morgan; Margaret used his surname. Years ago, someone was helping me enter D.A.R. and she was using the other William Caldwell you mentioned. With the help of another researcher, I proved to her that he was not my ancestor. Can't always rely on the D.A.R. records. Noland 588.
