Biography

Alexander McDaniel, eldest child of Caleb and Martha (Williams) McDaniel, was born in Ohio several years after the McDaniel family left Monroe County, Virginia [now WV]. He farmed all his life in Symmes Township of Lawrence County. He appears as Alex in the 1850 census and Ellie in the 1880 census. He was twice married and raised a family of nine children in all.

Alexander was first married to Katherine Halterman on 30 January 1833, by John Pethoud, Justice of the Peace.[1] The couple had two children - Henry and Rutha - before Katherine's untimely death in or shortly after childbirth, which was in 1836.

Alexander was next married to widow Delilah Filkins nee Miller on either 26 or 28 May 1846, by Joseph Yates, Justice of the Peace. The Probate Court Register lists the marriage twice, both accounts signed by Yates but one stating the 26th and the other the 28th.[2][3] Alexander and Delilah had several children together.

The family is found in the 1850 and 1880 census as follows ...

1850 Symmes Township, Lawrence Co., OH; p. 423; 2 Nov 1850
Alex McDaniel, age 36, b. in OH, Farmer
Delila McDaniel, age 30, b. in OH
Rutha McDaniel, age 14, b. in OH
Joseph McDaniel, age 4, b. in OH
Catharin McDaniel, age 1, b. in OH
Henry McDaniel, age 16, b. in OH, Farmer[4]
1880 Symmes Tshp, Lawrence County, Ohio, ED 97, Sheet p 18B, 18 Jun 1880
Ellie McDaniel, age 74, Head, b. in OH, father b. in OH, mother b. in VA, No Occupation
Delila, age 68, Wife, b. in OH father, both parents b. in OH
James, age 24, Son, b. in OH both parents b. in OH, Farm Laborer[5]

The 1880 census is the last known record of Alexander. The date and place of his death, and place of burial, are as yet undiscovered.

Excerpt from Henry Miller Family and Descendants, Page 142

Evidently Alex McDaniel was a farmer by trade. He possibly did some work cutting wood for the furnaces that were not too far distant.

We do not know when Delilah or Alex, her husband died, or where they are buried. Again we are left to some guessing. We do have them listed in the 1880 census, living in Symmes township of Lawrence county. Their son James is still with them. Their son William Franklin had been married the previous year and was living nearby.

So both of them died after the census of 1800, and as for where they are buried, I would tend to believe that they are in the Buffalo (Rehoboth) cemetery where there is a sister of Delilah, also two half-brothers and other relatives buried.
