Biography

1776 Project
Captain Risdon McDaniel served with North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

Risdon McDaniel was the youngest son of James McDaniel. He was living in Craven County, which later became Jones County, in 1769.[1]

He married Rachel Jarmon and lived in Jones County, North Carolina next to his two brothers.

During the Revolution, he was commissioned a Captain of a company of Jones County Militia in 1781. He was in charge of the company during at least one documented skirmish, styled, the Battle of Jumping Run. One would be hard pressed to call it a battle.[2]

Risden's military commission found it's way to Decatur County, Georgia ( probably purloined by estranged son Buckner) where it was given to other McDaniel family members and passed down as an heirloom. [3]

Risden prospered during his life. He was a small planter. His estate at his death included ten slaves. He may have been overly indulgent with some of his offspring, at least enough so that his sentiments regarding their stewardship made its way into his will.

He had a falling out with his son Buckner, as he gave him nothing, but acknowledging the debts he had already paid for him. It must have amounted to more than a paltry sum to remove any more inheritance. Risdon was the guardian and administrator of brother James' estate.[4]
