John was born 22 Aug 1795 in Frederick County, Maryland. He was the youngest of eleven children of Samuel and Elizabeth McDaniel. John grew up in MD and joined the Maryland Militia during the War of 1812. He was a private in the Company of George Flautts and during his short three month enlistment he was assigned in the protection of Ft McHenry in Baltimore (short enlistments in the militia were not uncommon back then). According to their marriage license, John married Mary (Elizabeth) Wiley on 3 May 1819 in Frederick County, MD, however, the family bible says they were married 20 May 1812 (which seems more likely given the birth dates of their children). They had three children; Samuel in 1818 , Mary in 1819, and Jeremiah in 1823.

Sometime between Jeremiah’s birth in 1823 and 1830 John moved his family to Fairfield County, Ohio. He shows up in the 1830 census in Liberty Township of Fairfield County with two young boys and his wife. This could make sense as we have found no records of his daughter Mary anywhere except her birth notation in the family bible, it is likely she either died in infancy or during the trip to Ohio. It is uncertain what John did for a living in either MD or OH, no property purchase records have been found, but it is likely he was a farmer. He did spend many years trying to get a land grant from the military for his service in the War of 1812, but there has been no documentation which shows he was ever successful.

During the 1850 census John shows up in the household of his eldest son Samuel and spends the rest of his life there on Samuel’s farm. John died on 12 Jul 1872 of old age according to his death certificate in Fairfield County, Ohio and is buried at the Fairview-Ritter Cemetery in that area.
