Biography

"David McGill graduated from Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky. 1813; studied theology in New York; licensed Aug. 6, 1817; ordained Oct. 1, 1818; was pastor at Hamilton and Concord, Ohio and Union and Sparta, Ill.; retired to Monmouth, Ill. preaching occasionally and writing; member of the Board of Education of the U.P. Church 1859-1861; editor of the Christian Intelligencer; Italic text connected with theItalic textUnited Presbyterian while a monthly in Cincinnati; editor of the Western United Presbyterian at Monmouth. He wrote for the periodic press more than any man in the church. The style of his articles was always clear, pointed and terse, and the matter seasonable and judicious. The same qualities characterized his preaching, while his manner was reverent and devout in the pulpit and yet frequently indulged in sarcasm, of which he was a thorough master."
