Biography

Michael Timothy was born on the 21 October 1883 in the Village of Roundstone, opposite the island of Inishnee on Roundstone Bay, in the Connemara region of County Galway, west coast of Ireland[1][2]. There is no record of his birth but his father was recorded on his Marriage Certificate as being Yachtman, Patrick Timothy (McDonagh) and his mother's name wasn't recorded.

Michael first appears in the Census Record of 1911 at sea with the Royal Navy[7]. With the 1939 Register Michael Timothy (McDonagh) is living with his second wife Jane Agnes (Munden/Williams) and their daughter Eileen Mary E. (McDonagh) at 85 Manor Road, in the City of Southampton, Southampton C.B., Hampshire, England[8].

Occupation

When he joins the Royal Navy in 1904, his occupation was that of a Fisherman. But with his marriage to Bridget (Joyce) in 1906, he is recorded as being a Sailor. He is an Insurance Agent with the Pearl Life Company, by the time of his marriage to Jane Agnes (Munden) in 1916. However, by the Register of 1939, he describes his occupation as that of a Gate Keeper in an Oil Factory.

Royal Naval Service

Michael Timothy (McDonagh) enlists in the Royal Navy on the 12 September 1904 at the Royal Navy Dockyard, in the City of Portsmouth, located on the eastern shore of Portsmouth Harbour, north of the Solent and the Isle of Wight, in Hampshire, England. He was given the Service number: 307474 and the rank of Stoker.

He was described as being 5 feet 8 inches with black hair, grey eyes and a dark complexion. The H.M.S. Acheron was the first ship he was attached to and the last ship was the H.M.S. Halcyon. His discharge takes place on the 5 October 1911 in the Town of Chatham, where he was an Invalided out and his rank was Stoker 1st Class[9]

Death

Michael Timothy (McDonagh) passes away between October and December 1947 in the City of Southampton, District of Southampton, in Hampshire, England. He was 64 years old at the time of his death[10].
