It is extremely unlikely that he is the son of Donald McDonald and Elspeth Frazer as so many unsourced family trees suggest, especially considering the fact that Donald does not seem to be a family name. He is probably the son of Archibald McDonald of Bladen County.
Archibald B. McDonald was born about 1795 in North Carolina, probably in Bladen County.
He migrated to Pulaski, Georgia[1] before eventually settling in Clarke, Alabama.[2][3]

He died before 14 October 1863 in Alabama when his estate was settled.
"Estate of Archibald B. McDonald, deceased, October 14, 1863.
Letters to General Administrator
It having been made known to the Court that said Archibald B. McDonald departed this life in this county, and that his death has been known more than sixty days; and that no person, entitled to administer his estate, has applied for letters of adminstration; and no other person having been appointed; and the Court being futher satisfied that the interests of those entitled to said estate requires that administration of the same should be had: It is ordered, adjudged and decreed that administration upon said estate be, and the same is hereby committed to D. Doffin, in his capacity of administrator general for this county; and, as such administrator, the said D. Doffin is directed; under this appointment, to proceed with said administration according to law. It is further ordered that an appraisement of said estate be made, and that J. J. Syphrit, James Everett, Jepe M. Bozeman, James S. Collier and Vincent M. Joiner be and they are hereby appointed and authorized to appraise said estate, and that they have notice of this appointment."
