Biography

Donald McDonald is a member of Clan MacDonald of Keppoch.

The McDonald traditional lands are shown at

MacDonald Lands

A survey of Clanranald lands at Moidart was conducted in 2008 [1] Is Donald the tenant mentioned on page 4?

Donald was born at Cranachan about 1740. Was he the son of John 111? This would fit naming patterns, his apparent status and his being a cousin of Long John.

Cranachan is mentioned in the Ordinance Survey of 1876 [2] [3]He was probably a grandson of Donald II McDonald but has not yet been identified in Rev. MacDonald's genealogy. He passed away about 1802.

The Cranachan mcDonalds are buried in the Cille Choirell churchyard on Tom Aingel a hill, above Spean Bridge. [4]

Multiple generations of descendants emigrated to Canada and Australia. [5]

  • DNA evidence links descendants of the Cranachan McDonalds *maryjean, New South Wales third/4th cousin to AMG, USA via Canada, *emg Ancestry 14cM 5th cousin MFerrie (Mary 1781-1851, daughter of Donald Cranchan MacDonald 1744–1810 and Mary McKenzie 1744–1810). Mary married Samuel Cameron 1781–1851. [6]

Research Notes

  • There were probably multiple Donald Cranachans alive concurrently and from several generations. Sufficient records to seperate them from each other have not been found as yet. Donald 1740 father of the Australian line is probably attached at the wrong generation level. He is one generation younger than listed siblings. More information is needed before the record can be split successfully. Note similar details for Donald Ruadh of Torgulbin.
