Alexander was born in 1817 in Argyll, Scotland. He was the son of John McDonald and Mary Reid [1]
He married Margaret Howie in 1834 in Scotland. [2]
In 1839 they came to the United States on the Marion. [3]
They were among the first settlers at the Scottish Settlement in Arglyle Illinois. [4]
They both died before 1850 leaving five young boys who were split up among the families in the settlement.
They also had a daughter who died in infancy.
The farm was sold to William Ferguson and the house was used for a school for a time.
