Biography

Duncan McDonald is a member of Clan MacDonald of Clanranald.

Space:Nimmitabel_McDonalds

Duncan was born 1763, Moidart, Inverness, Scotland; died 16 Feb 1857, Mohawk Station, Maclaughlin River near Nimmitabel, New South Wales; was buried 19 Feb 1857, Pioneer Cemetery, Nimmitabel, New South Wales. Irene Kerr gives his father as Donald. [1] his relationship to the other Moidart Mcdonalds who settled Nimmitabel is unknown, but he is almost certainly a kinsman. Space:Nimmitabel_McDonalds

Duncan married Margaret McPherson, 1793, Moidart, Inverness, Scotland. Margaret (daughter of McPherson, Unknown and McDonald, Mary) was born in Moidart in 1775, . They and their family of 11 children who are included at Monaro Pioneers immigrated to Australia on the "British King". The shipping list lists Duncan aged 65 shepherd, wife 64, 5 male and 2 female children, Catholic, sponsored by Mr T Martin, Nimmitabel. [2] This is my transcription of Duncan's Passenger record which is very difficult to read. It does not come up at State Archives under Mc or MacDonald:

  • Duncan Macdonald (illegible) married male immigrant Brought out by Government A native of Mordent (Moidart) (illegible) Son of Donald Macdonald (illegible) Labourer, Calling Shepherd Age Sixty five years Health Good Religion Catholic Remarks (3 words this?? any ernplements

As with many of the other Monaro settlers Duncan and family initially worked for the Campbell's at Duntroon. Robert Campbell 1769-1846

Research Notes

  • Parents
    • Family naming patterns support Donald, as this is the name of Dduncan's eldest son
    • NSW Death Certificate MCDONALD DUNCAN 2314/1857 Father ARCHIBALD DIED BOMBALA BOMBALA> Note this could be for a different Duncan who died the same year or the informant may have been in error
    • Both Monaro Pioneers and the Braidwood genealogy site give Duncan's father as Archibald MCDONALD. the Braidwood genealogy site adds that Archibald was born about 1738 in Achnancoichean, Kilmonivaig, Inverness, and Duncan's mother was Mary JOHNSON who was born about 1742 in of Lismore, Inverness. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Duncan by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Duncan:

Hi Elsie. By taking a look at the British King passenger record, it appears that Duncan was the son of a Donald or Duncan (handwriting very unclear) MacDonald a labourer of the same place (ie Moidart), and so I believe the Braidwood site is incorrect. Duncan was not the son of Arichabld of Achnanchoichean. http://www.monaropioneers.com/TNG/showmedia.php?mediaID=15531&medialinkID=19814
