Biography

George was born in Stornoway in 1831 [1]. The baptisms register gives the family address as Mill Street and the 1841 census shows the family living at the Latta Mill in Mill Street (https://www.isle-of-lewis.com/what-to-do/historical-attractions/lattas-mill-stornoway/).

George trained as a blacksmith, the 1851 Census showing him as an apprentice. In 1858 he married Margaret MacRitchie [2]. His marriage registration was signed with a X so presumably he could not write. George and Margaret had the following children:

- Annabella 1859 married George MacDonald (no relation)

- Keith 1860 married Flora Montgomery (also known as Mackenzie) and became post-master in Stornoway

- Margaret 1863 probably married Alexander Mackay

- Henrietta 1864 probably married John Fraser

- James 1867 probably married Julia Ann Hughes in Calcutta

- George 1869 probably married Nora

- Christina 1871 probably married John Jamieson

- Catherine 1872 probably married Ellis

- Alexander John 1874

- Agnes 1877 probably married Ian Watson

I have not yet been able to fully trace all of the children due to the common names.

George worked as a blacksmith throughout his life living in Keith Street Stornoway. George died in 1910 [3].

Seoras in Gaelic. Known as Seoras an Gobha "the blacksmith" (https://www.hebrideanconnections.com/people/65973). This family mostly used the spelling Macdonald.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
