Ronald was born in 1865 at Woodford near Warnambool, Victoria to Norman McDonald and Mary (née Canavan). ^[1]

His obituary mentions a son, Herbert Herbert Ronald James (abt.1904-1982) whose birth is registered under the name of Ronald’s wife’s first husband.

MR. MCDONALD'S DEATH

The death occurred yesterday morning, at his home at Distillery Hill, Commercial Street, Merbein, of Mr. Ronald McDonald, at the age of 60 years. The late Mr. McDonald, who had been in the district for the past fourteen years, was connected with the Merbeln office of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. and his death will be mourned by a great many residents of Merbein. The late Mr. McDonald was highly respected by all that knew him. and great sympathy will be felt for his widow, Mrs. Mary McDonald, and his only son. Herbert. ”^[3]
