Catherine Martha McDonnell was born in Slane, Co. Meath, Ireland on 19 July 1896. She was the daughter of Patrick McDonnell and Anne McGovern. ^{[1] [2][3]}She was known by the preferred name "Kathleen". Her father Patrick seemed to be employed at different times as a victualler, butcher and postman according to the birth records of his children. At the time of Kathleen's birth he was listed as a "victualler".

In 1901 Kathleen was a 5-year-old living with her parents and siblings at house No. 44 in Slane Town. At this time, her father was employed as a "postman". ^{[4] [5]}

Kathleen died at her home in Slane from septicopyemia on 9th July 1908. She had suffered from this condition for about one month before her death. ^[6][7]She was only ten days from her twelfth birthday when she died. She is buried with other family members in the Hill of Slane cemetery, County Meath. ^[8]

Two of Kathleen's sisters also died in 1908. Florence died 29 Apr 1908 at age 8 and Mary died on 21 June aged 22. Their father registered the deaths of his three daughters together on 9th August 1908.
