Records are split - some McDonnell some McDonald. My grandmother (Elizabeth Farnham nee Chambers) always said McDonnell. Her mother Mary Ann Chambers (nee McDonnell) always had McDonnell.

At family reunions some have McDonnell some McDonald.

In Canada, it was common for McDonnells to be recorded by clerks and enumerators as McDonald, particularly in the 19th century. My Irish McDonnell ancestors were frequently recorded as McDonald, particularly by Scottish-Canadians and in the 19th century.

Can you tell from a gravestone, or marriage certificate with a signature, whether Owen called himself McDonnell or McDonald?

I also found, since the literacy level was higher by the 20th century -- and maybe people asked about spelling or gave it -- that name spellings became more accurate. If the death record was registered as McDonnell, and any of the other records concur, then it may well be McDonnell.

I have opted for McDonnell Joanna as their marriage & also for Owen's & Elizabeth's deaths, they are all registered as McDonnell. I have checked Find a Grave but no grave on there for either of them. Oddly though, the children's births & deaths are a mixed bunch. 3 births registered as McDonnell & the rest are registered as McDonald.
That mixed set of spellings in the records is exactly what used to happen to my McDonnells. I started paying attention to the name of the registrar on the document and found that those with a Scottish name were more likely to spell it McDonald. Seems only the Irish knew it was McDonnell. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, there were Scots who came to Canada as United Empire Loyalists, and some of those spelled it McDonel or MacDonell.

McDonnell-562 and McDonald-15291 appear to represent the same person because: Again an orphaned profile I took on.
