New Zealand Cross (1869)

Biography

Lt-Colonel Thomas McDonnell had the nickname "Fighting Mac" for his leadership in the New Zealand Wars against (rebel) Maori.

After 6 unsuccessful attempts applying for the NZ Cross he was finally awarded one on 31 Mar 1886.

Accounts vary as to his ethics and actions against the Maori but he certainly had courage, energy and resourcefulness when leading men.
