Biography

This profile is part of the McDougal Name Study.

Archibald was born in 1795. (Probably in Canada) As often is the case more than one version of the surname has been used. MacDougald, McDougall

Catherine McGillies was to married Archibald Macdougald 5 Jun 1832 in St Andrew`s West, Ontario, Canada.[1]

His date of death is also unclear, 1838 is suggested by one source, 1856 by another and and 1862 by another. If as early as 1838 where does that leave the children born after that date?

Research notes

Archibald had John John McDougall and Catherine McDonald as his parents, I have removed these parents.

John McDougall and Catherine Mcdonald had several children listed in Scotlands People baptism Index, after their marriage in Jan 1787. Some of the these children went to Canada but Archibald was not listed.

  1. Hugh b1787 Fortingall - d Scotland

Annie McDougald died at Lancaster 5C N36.

At the time she was living with her son and wife the last family owners of this farm. !00 acres of the original 200 acres were previously forfeited by a will stipulation.

On the night of Annie's death my grandaunt Bella, wife of Archie McGillis , recalled a glowing light.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Archibald by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Archibald:

I question whether the Archibald McDougal who was married to Catherine McGillis was born in Scotland.

The marriage record that you cite gives Archibald MacDougald’s home parish as St. Raphael, which was in Charlottenburg Twp., Glengarry. https://saintraphaelsruins.com/about/

Archibald McDougal is found in the 1851 census of Lancaster Twp., Glengarry, Canada West. https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1851&op=img&id=e002349041 The family is listed as Archibald (57), Mary (25), Angus (18), Donald (17), John (10), Nancy (16) and Ellen (8). All are listed as born in G. C. W., which I take as Glengarry, Canada West.

The widower Archibald McDougald is found in the 1861 census of Lancaster Twp. https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1861&op=img&id=4391550_00341 The family is listed as Archibald (66), Angus (27), Donald (26), John (19), Mary (35), Helen (17) – all born in Upper Canada)

In the 1871 census https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1871&op=img&id=4396627_00289 The family is listed as Archabald (76), Mary (44), John (27) and Margaret (29) – all born in Ontario.

Archibald (83) died in Lancaster 10 October 1876. His death registration says that he was born in Lancaster Township and was a veteran of the War of 1812. https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-content/view/838616:8946?tid=&pid=&queryId=c02dc8a3777ce296130c4b59f8ead4da&_phsrc=DYT1495&_phstart=successSource

So, all three censuses in which he appears give his birthplace as Canada.

The following information supports the identification of this widower as the spouse of Catherine McGillis.

The record is hard to read but when Donald McDougal married Catherine McDonald in Montreal in 1864, his parents are listed as Archibald McDougal and Catherine McGillis https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-content/view/23455444:1091

When Angus McDougall (29, born in Glengarry) married Mary McDonald in Barrie Ontario in 1867, his parents were listed as Archibald McDougall and Catherine McGillis https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-content/view/105267059:61505

When Ellen McDougald (26) married John J. McDonald in Lancaster Twp. in November 1871, her parents were listed as Archibald McDougald and Catherine McGillis. https://www.ancestry.ca/discoveryui-content/view/81058877:7921

McDougald-158 and McDougall-2814 appear to represent the same person because: Same person
Are there any sources to prove your family tree? The parents you name have 9 children in Fortingall in Perthshire baptised both before and after the time Archibald was born. I have not found anything on Archibald except a possible census in 1851 with Archibald aged 52 with Catherine (32) in York, Ontario. Though this entry states both were born in Scotland. Any help is appreciated. Liz
Family story has Archibald as born in Scotland, a Protestant so the boys were reared Protestant, the girls Catholic.
