Biography

Janet was born around June in the Hamlet of Skiag, a small cluster of farm cottages on the south bank of Loch Tay, southwest of the Village of Kenmore, Kenmore Parish, Perthshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Hugh McDougall and Ann Kennedy.

Baptism

Her baptism takes place, on the 11 July 1777, possibly at the Parish Church, in the Village of Kenmore, Parish of Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland[1]

Marriage

Janet (McDougall) marries Daniel "Donald" Ferguson around the 12 December 1801. The first reading of their Banns can be found in a Monzie parish record dated 21 November 1801. The 2nd and 3rd readings are not recorded. On the assumption Banns were read following the normal pattern on the next two Sundays the couple probably married between 5th and 12th of December 1801. However, she was already familiar with the independent harsh living of rural agriculture into which she was marrying. [2].

Children

The couple had the following children-

  1. Ann Ferguson
  2. Margaret Ferguson
  3. Betty Ferguson
  4. Cathrine Ferguson
  5. Christian Ferguson
  6. Donald Ferguson
  7. Duncan Ferguson
  8. Hugh Ferguson
  9. Janet Ferguson
  10. John Ferguson

Residence

In 1841, Donald, aged 65, shepherd, “Y” to born in county, Janet aged 60, blank at occupation, “Y” to born in county, and Hugh, aged 30, Mason, “Y” to born in county. Also living there was Peter Anderson, aged 15, M.S. (Male Servant), “Y” to born in county. Note that in this first census the instruction was to round down ages to the nearest 5 years. They reside in the Hamlet of Lurg, on Lurg Burn, east of Glen Lednock, in the Parish of Monzievaird & Strowan, Perthshire, Scotland. Lurg is a tenanted shepherd’s cottage in Glen Lednock sitting by the side of the Lurg Burn which separates the cottage from Carroglen Farm, its near & only neighbour. A few hundred yards lower the burn reaches the River Lednock. In turn the Lednock eventually flows into the Earn at nearby Comrie. For more information & photographs about Lurg & its Ferguson inhabitants spanning 100 years see the WikiTree profile, Lurg[3].

The isolation of Lurg Cottage- fully a 5-mile hike up the Glen from Comrie.

By 1851, Daniel "Donald" is living with his wife Janet (McDougall); their daughter Janet (Ferguson) and his grandson, James Neil (baptised Niel), Janet’s son to James (Neil/Niel) at Balmuick, which is a farm southeast) of Lurg, on the way to the Village of Comrie. However, the family is still living in a Cottage, in the Hamlet of Lurg, Monzievaird & Strowan Parish, Perthshire, Scotland[4]. He remains in Lurg throughout his adult life.

Death

Janet (McDougall) passes away between 1851 and 1855 in the Hamlet of Lurg, on Lurg Burn, east of Glen Lednock, in the Parish of Monzievaird & Strowan, Perthshire, Scotland.
