John was born on Aug 22, 1833 in Jersey County, Illinois.[1][2] He was the son of Charles and Matilda (Rice) McDow. In the 1840 census, his father was listed in Greene (now Jersey) County, Illinois.[3] John was presumably represented as a male between the ages of 5-9 years. In the 1850 census, John was listed with his parents living in Mississippi Township, Jersey, Illinois.[4] On Sep 9, 1858, John married Mary Harris in Jerseyville, Jersey, Illinois.[5][6] The couple resided and farmed in Mississippi Township.[7][8][9][2][10] John died on Jan 22, 1914[11] and was buried in the Newbern Cemetery in East Newbern, Jersey, Illinois.[1]
