Jean Charles was born in Varennes, Canada, Nouvelle-France on 9 February 1795. He is the son of Charles Mc Duff and Angélique Morand Laforme. He was baptized on the same day and his godparents were Jean Martin and Marie Laforme, aunt of the young Jean Charles.
