NAME: According to family sources, he was given middle name Hays because a
neighbor woman named Mrs. Hays assisted in his birth. He told his daughter
Judy that he later changed it to Henry because he had been involved in some
sort of labor dispute and was afraid he might be blackballed if he did not
change the name, but wanted to keep the initial 'H'.
DEATH: Death certificate, obituary, cem. records.
BIRTH: Place and date from his Dept. of Navy 'Continuous. Service
Certificate', no. 46202 and His Report of Separation from the Armed Forces of
the U.S., Depart, of Navy, Book 23, p. 544. His service number was 58456.
OCCUPATION: Employed by Southern Railway in Somerset, KY, from Sept. 1908 to
Aug. 1913. Enlisted in Navy Aug. 9,. 1913, in Cincinnati. Jan. 4, 1916;
qualified for Submarine Torpedo Boat works. Aug. 8, 1917: honorable discharge
in Norfolk, Va.; enlisted again Sept. 18, 1917, at Naval Recruiting Station in
Louisville, KY. 30 July 1919: Honorable discharge in Pittsburgh,PA
(Demobilization Station). 7 Oct. 1919: reenlisted for four years in New
London, CT (ship Fulton?). 21 Nov. 1922: re-enlisted in New London (ship USS
Cheswick?), with note that he had received Good Conduct Medal on July 30, 1919.
6 Oct. 1923: enlisted again in New London for two full years. Jan 21, 1924:
appointed Acting Machinist. He became a commissioned officer on Jan. 10, 1924,
and Chief Machinist on 10 January 1930. Altogether, he had 15 years
and ten months of foreign/sea duty. Retired in 1952 after almost
40 years in the Navy.
!APPEARANCE: When he entered the Navy in 1913, he was described as
5'7', 134 pounds, with hazel eyes and black hair, and a ruddy complexion.
Personal characteristics, marks, etc. included several scars as well as a 's.

and his weight as 190; hair gray.
