From "The Scotch-Irish McElroys in America"[1]
Samuel McElroy, b. and brought up in Sligo, Ireland, came to America and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1821. He was b. in 1788. His mother was Cecelia Knott. Mr. McElroy came to the United States through Canada. He d. in 1868, at the age of eighty years. The maiden name of his wife was Ann Beamish.

His parents, Samuel and Anna (Beamish) McElroy, natives of the North of Ireland, were married and lived afterward in that city. The father, who was a nailer by trade, and started the first nail-machine in Western Pennsylvania, at Shoeuberger's mill, died in 1876, aged eighty-three years; his wife died in 1878, aged eighty-two years.
