Biography

Micajah McElroy, Sr. was the only child of Archibald McElroy, Jr. and Sarah Lynn. He was born September 20, 1760, in Wake County, North Carolina. He married Sarah (last name unknown, possibly Cooley) about 1780 in North Carolina.

Micajah served in the Revolutionary War 1780-1781, amounting to seven months in all. He served under various Captains and was in some skirmishes with the Tories (British). He lived in Wake County, North Carolina during the time he served in the Revolutionary War. He applied for a Revolutionary War pension on October 19, 1832. A summary of service on which the pension was allowed is as follows:

Rank: Private—West Tenn. Agency N.C., Service, Micajah McElroy, being duly sworn deposed: That he entered service in the fall of the year in North Carolina under Captain Bryant, Major Sharpe, Colonel Cafur, Lt. Joseph Peoples, and Ensign Henry Pope; That he lived in Wake County, North Carolina and was drafted there; went to Hillsborough, to Salesbury, at which place he remained three months—time for which drafted; that he was born the year 1760 on the 20th of September in Wake County, North Carolina. That he removed to Lincoln County, Tennessee, where he has resided for about 23 or 24 years.

Micajah had moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee by 1810. According to court records, he and his son William were awarded a contract to build the first Courthouse in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee on February 7, 1814. Micajah lived in Lincoln County until his death in 1832.
