Commodore was the son of James & Sarah Purcell McElvain and one of six children. On 10 Feb 1892, he married Iris Maulsby.
They were the parents of 7 children-John James, Martha Elizabeth (Scott-Trimble), Warren Craft, Commodore Purcell, Howard Harold, Marion Revello, and Carl Raymond.
