Notes

Note H00487[McEwen.FTW]
David was said to be "of Cornwall" at the time of the children's baptism. All children were baptized by the Rev. John Bethune at Ontario, at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Williamstown, Glengary, Ontario, Canada. Rev. Bethune was the only clergy of the Kirk of Scottland in the area.
This David's birth year was arrived at by subtracting the age 75 which he claimed to be in 1840 when applying for reinstatement as UEL.
David McCuen established a ferry between Cornwall and St. Regis, as noted in a court action July 1799. We have not detrermined if it was this David or his father who would have been 55 years old. The property on McNiff's map of Cornwall shows the McCoones as sharing lot #3 with William Carr, and that lot was located on the St. Lawrence River as part of the first concession. The location of that property appears to be ideal for a ferry.
The McCuens were to keep a sufficient boat, or batteau, and two good canoes. The charges were fixed as follows:
A single person from Cornwall to St. Regis 2s 6d
A single person from Cornwall to Priest's farm on the east side of the mouth of the Black or St. Regis River 3s
Two persons to Priest's farm 3s2d
Two persons to St. Regis 3s
For each person above two to St. Regis 1s
For each person above two to Priest's farm 3d
Single person and horse or cow to St. Regis 5s
Single person and horse or cow to Priest's farm 6s
One or two persons, horses, cows, or oxen 7s 6d (Add 4d for each cwt of goods exceeding two)
If a full load or half a load of boat 12s
If a full load or half load of canoe 5s
