This family was one of the colony of Scotch and Irish families that emigrated to America in 1718, and many of whom settled in the vicinity of Hopkinton. The name of the first American ancestor was Robert, and he had a son, Ebenezer, who was born in 1751 and was a soldier in the War of the Revolution. Ebenezer married Elizabeth Gibson and and the couple had eight children, including son Lawson. Ebenezer also had a brother, Walter McFarland, a farmer, and also a skillful surveyor, in which latter capacity he laid out a large portion of Hopkinton and adjoining towns.[1] Ebenezer was the first owner of the McFarland-Sanger House[2] in Hopkinton. Ebenezer was active in town politics and was one of the founders of the town's Methodist society. He was probably a farmer, as there was little industry in Hopkinton in the 18th century. Ebenezer passed away in 1837.
