He married Margaret W DOWNING, daughter of John DOWNING and Mary (—?—), on 13 Sep 1763 at Bedford County, VA; with John Downing as Surety. Children (surname MCFARLAND):[2][3][4]
He may be the James McFarland on the tax rolls of Washington County, VA, in 1782 under Col. Arthur Campbell with 1 tithable, 3 horses, and 3 nett cattle and listed right after Robert McFarland.[5]
On 26 Mar 1793, James was one of only 4 who escaped an Indian attack on a group of settlers from Caswell Co NC on Boone's Trace at Laurel County, KY.[5]
