Biography

Lucille was born in 1887. She was the daughter of Robert McFarlane and Margaret Percival[1]. The 1901 census provides a birthdate of December 25, 1887 for Lucille[2]. There is a birth record for an unnamed female baby McFarlane on this same date in the Manitoba vital records collection[3].

Lucille was the middle of three sisters:

Sadly Robert McFarlane died in 1891[4].

Lucille's mother remarried William Stitt in 1893[5].

The family appears in the 1901 census[2]. Lucille's paternal grandmother was also living with the family at this time.

William Stitt worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. After starting his career with CPR in Winnipeg, he was transferred to Australia in 1901[6]. The family spent six years in Australia. Upon their return to Canada in 1907, William was named general passenger agent for all of CPR's eastern lines. This promotion brought the family to Montreal[6].

By the time of the 1911 census, Lucille had married merchant William Graham[7]. The census shows the extended family all together in the Graham household in Ottawa:

  • William Graham, age 26, head
  • Lucy Graham, age 23, wife
  • William Stitt, age 55, father-in-law
  • Margaret Stitt, age 44, mother-in-law
  • Margaret McFarlane, age 21, sister-in-law
  • Fred Graham, age 65, father
  • Two domestic servants

It is likely that Lucy's parents and sister were simply visiting Ottawa at the time of the census since William was still in his position with CPR in Montreal [6].

Lucille passed away in 1952.
