Colin Dawson McFarlane was born 2nd August 1810 at Stirling in Scotland. Son of James and Agnes nee Walker on 23rd February 1800. - the middle name was in honour of his father’s business associate and friend. He served for a while as a trooper in the Scots Greys Regiment, which might have influenced his later choice of career as saddler. (MacFarlane's Lantern No. 121 - March 2012)
Later Colin lived in Banff. In 1838 he emigrated to Australia with two of his brothers on 'Superb' arriving at Victoria, Australia.
He soon moved to South Australia to join the South Australian Police Force by 1840.
In 1840 Colin is listed as a saddler in Hindley Street, Adelaide.
He met and married Scots-born Marion Muir, whose family roots were in Ayrshire, in 1844.

Several of his wife Marions relatives also settled in Strathalbyn. Rankine, Sloan, Paterson and others most of whom had arrived on the ship ‘Fairfield’ in 1839. List of passengers of the ship Fairfield
At some time each family went to gold rush in the1850s.
He later set up saddle business on the high street of Strathalbyn

"In April 1856 a hurricane struck Strathalbyn Matthew Rankine wrote in his diary "C. D. McFarlane's house and shop unroofed. Part of the shingled roof was carried in a body right over the top of the house and landed in front of Dr. Hawker's door, smashing his fence. McFarlane suffered a great deal through all his saddlery getting wet" and later - McFarlane's family have been living at 'Glenbarr' the home of Marion Muir's aunt Mrs William Rankine ( Jane (Paterson) Rankine )." DEATH OF MR. C. D. McFARLANE. Strathalbyn, July 23 1890 Mr. Colin Dawson McFarlane, a very old resident of this district, and a colonist of over fifty-one years, died this morning, after a long illness, at the advanced age of eighty. Mr. McFarlane was one of the original settlers in this district, and was an energetic member of the community, but of late years had taken little part in public affairs. [2]
