When Glenn Erroll McGehee was born December 14, 1888, in Hickman, Kentucky, his father, William Burrus McGehee, Jr., was 23 and his mother Mary Ella Beaty, was 27. In 1900, the family lived near Cayce Station, Kentucky.[1] He "secured" a Certificate of qualification to teach at McFadden School House.[2], (It was said he was the youngest teacher in the county.) In September 1908, he was teaching at the Woodlawn school in Alexander.[3] [4] On March 7, 1909, he relocated to Paducah to attend Draughon's College[5]. The Federal Census taken on April 14, 1910, indicated that Erroll was still living with his parents in Driscoll, Kentucky.[6]
He married Vivian Milner on October 26, 1910, in Cayce, Kentucky[7][8][9]. At the time of their marriage, Vivian was suffering with tuberculosis. In spite of her health, they attempted to have children. Their first and only child was born and died unnamed in 1911. Vivian died the following year.
By 1915 Erroll had moved to Los Angeles, California, and married Leona E. Myers on February 23, 1915,[10][11] and was working as an "auto opr." Their first child, Gordon McGehee was born on December 10, 1916. In 1917 Erroll was working as a salesman for the Crescent Creamery Co.[12] He was listed as one of the first selected for conscription in World War I.[13] On June 15, 1919, he started to work as a motorman for the Pacific Electric Railway Company. In the 1920 Federal Census[14] taken January 9, 1920, Erroll was working as a chauffeur for a bus line in Los Angeles.
In 1923[15] and 1926[16] Erroll is listed in the city directories of Bakersfield, California, although the 1926 listing may be a carry-over from the previous directory (daughter Dorothy b. 1925 in Arizona would indicate a move before the 1926 directory). His occupation in both is as a fireman on the railroad. Erroll and Leona obtained a divorce (date unknown but assumed to be before the move to Douglas, Arizona).
By 1925 Erroll had moved to Douglas, Arizona, and married Lorena (unknown maiden name). and was working as a fireman for the Pacific Electric Railway Company.[17] Their daughter, Dorothy McGehee was born about 1925 in Arizona. The 1930 Census[18] lists their residence as Douglas, Arizona, and his occupation as fireman.
The 1940 Census[19] and his World War II Draft Registration[20] shows Erroll still living in Douglas, Arizona, but married to his fourth wife Dorothy (Jackson) McGehee. By this time, Erroll was now an engineer on the railroad.[21] The census shows that Dorothy had two children from a previous marriage.
Erroll died on October 22, 1942, in Douglas, Arizona.[22] His brother, James Beatty McGehee, traveled to Arizona to transfer him for burial in the Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery in Moscow, Kentucky,[23] along-side his first wife, Vivian.
