Biography

William was born on 16th October 1835 in Girvan and baptised there on 10th November 1835. His parents were John McGill and Jean Ross. ^[1]

William is recorded in the 1841 Census, with his family, living at Grangeston, Girvan, where his father was employed as an agricultural labourer. His mother Jean is mistakenly recorded as 'Agness McGill' however the approximate years of birth of the children confirm this is the correct family. Brother John McGill is missing from this record and is presumed to have died in infancy. ^[2]

By 1851 his father had become a weaver and the family had moved from the country into the town of Girvan. They lived in Wilson Street, still complete as a family. William was employed as a servant. ^[3]

His father, John, died in 1860. William and his brother Bryce were both weavers and lived with their mother Jean and youngest brother Robert in Viccarton Street, Girvan all the other siblings having left home. ^[4]

In 1871 William, now a wool weaver, was still living at home with his mother J in Viccarton Street with Jean supporting him as a wool winder. ^[5]

On 6th December 1872, William married Jane Drynan. ^[6]

There is no record of William and Jean having any children. In 1881 they lived at Lagganwhilly, Girvan. William was a handloom weaver. ^[7]

William died of a cerebral haemorhage in Kilmarnock on 16 Oct 1835. His death was notified by his nephew, William McGill who was also his beneficiary, his wife Jean having predeceased him. ^[8]
