Biography
John was born around 1798 to James T. McGinnis and Elizabeth (Williams) McGinnis. In 1821, John married Mary Polly Shields[1], who may have been older than him by at least a few years, possibly more, and they seem to have had at least 2 sons together-it's uncear if Mary brought any children from a previous marriage with her to her new marriage and family. The 1850 census states both shows John, aged 50 and Mary, age 62 as being born in Virginia and living with a 27 year old woman "Ma (?)", likely their daughter Mary, who is listed as having been born in Georgia[2]. John survived Mary Polly, who died in 1851. He is later listed in the 1870 census at age 72, living in his daughter Mary's household, age 42 along with four of her daughters [3]. This later 1870 census records John's birthplace as Georgia, which contradicts the earlier 1850 census listing both John and wife Mary Polly as having been born in Virginia.
