Biography

Pyrrhus McGinnis was born in 1791 in Frederick county, Virginia, a son of James McGinnis and Sarah Davis. Pyrrhus' father is a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and is honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor#A076996. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of Pyrrhus McGinnis, who married Nancy Hensley. Descendants of this family are eligible to join the National Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. [1]

On December 3, 1812, in Cabell county, Virginia (became West Virginia at the onset of the American Civil War, in 1863) "Purrhus Mcginnis" married [Elizabeth] Betsey Ladd Barner. [2] Children of Pyrrhus and Betsey include:

  • Harriet McGinnis, born 1821, in Logan county, Virginia, married James P. Mitchell in 1843, in Logan county. [3]

In 1824, Pyrrhus married secondly, Mrs. Nancy (Farley) Hensley. Nancy had married first Stephen Hensley, on April 19, 1814, in Cabell county. [4] "Pyrus" and Nancy "McGinness" are found on the United States census of 1850, residing in Raleigh, Raleigh county, Virginia, with sons, Samuel, age 20, Gordon, age 17, Thomas, age 14, and daughter, Catherine Maper, age 15. [5]

Pyrrhus and Nancy are found in the birth records of their son, Samuel "Ginnis" born circa 1834, who at the age of 25 years, married Eveline Harper, 19 year old daughter of Jacob and Elvina Harper. [6]

"Pyrhus Mc Ginnis" and Nancy are found on the 1860 census, residing in the "Town and Vicinity of Beckley" in Raleigh county, Virginia. Their son, Thomas, age 24 resides at home. In the household is also, Stephen M. Handsley, age 41 and Sarah Handley, age 13. [7] Stephen M. "Hensley" is Nancy's son from her first marriage. His wife, Phebe Jones died in 1852, leaving Sarah, born in 1847 without a mother at home. [8]

Pyrrhus McGinnis died in 1873, in Saxon, Raleigh county, West Virginia and is buried in the Cove Creek Cemetery. [9]
