Biography

Mary U. McGovern was born on 12 December 1895 in Manhattan, New York. Her parents were Richard McGovern and Mary Culkin.^[1]

Mary and her sisters grew up living in the tenements on 10th Avenue and West 29th/30th Streets, Manhattan.^{[2][3][4][5][6]} After 1920, the family moved to 265 East Burnside, Bronx^[7], where they remained until after her mother's death in 1935.^[8] The 1940 U.S. Census^[9] shows Mary and her sister, Elizabeth, residing on Ithaca Street in Elmhurst (Queens), not far from where their oldest sister Anna McGovern Dunn was living with her family.

Mary McGovern worked for the New York Railway Express.

Research Notes

Mary's whereabouts after 1940 are unclear. I have not yet found a matching death entry. Perhaps she married later in life. - Freeth-52 14:58, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
