Molly is the only child of Leo and Irvine Lidstone McGowan. She was born in Bellingham, Washington, and moved to Newport, Rhode Island, when her naval officer father was stationed there. Her father died when Molly was 13, and Molly and her mother moved to Inglewood, California to live with her grandmother.
Molly died at age 16 of Hodgkin's disease. She was buried with her father at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. A memorial was established in her name at Coronado High School in San Diego, California.
