Biography

Annie was born about 1847.^[1] She was the daughter of Hugh McGowan and Elizabeth Aitken. In the 1851 census, she is staying with her grandmother Anne at 32 Glen Street, Paisley ^[2] She and her family emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales in 1856 aboard the Ben Nevis.^[3] Her parents are understood to have died when she was about 13 and she and her sister went to live with their aunt Elizabeth at Gudgenby and later Booroomba. Annie married Stefano/Stephen Sponza in 1869 (he tragically died in 1885, leaving behind his wife and 3 very young children).The Sponza family lived at: in 1880 at Corfu Street, and in ~1885-c.1901 at 165 Windsor Street, Paddington. later, in 1913 at 68 Ruthven Street,Bondi (with daughter Francis). Annie passed away in 1933.
