Biography

James and his twin brother Patrick were born in December of 1853; they were the sons of John McGowan and Margaret Gilroy. The boys were baptized on the 7th of December in Kinlough Parish, Leitrim, Sligo; James’ sponsors were John Gill and Ellen Reilly.

James would immigrate to the United States circa 1873 and become a US Citizen in 1879.

James was married, she however remains a mystery. James’ profession was that of a Baker. He did return to Ireland on two occasions; once in 1878 for a four-month period (according to his US Passport Application), and again in December of 1923. He declared his address in Ireland was Townytallon, Tullaghan, Donegal. Research for that townland turns out to be “Tawnytallan” – where we do find James’ father listed in Griffith’s Valuation.

Four years after his return to the US, James passed away on May 11, 1927. His death certificate indicates he was a Widower, and his residence at the time was the Home for Aged (aka Little Sisters of the Poor) 135 West 106th Street, New York.
