Biography
Sug (McGowan) Lampley is a part of US Black heritage.
Sugar "Sug" McGowan was born on ~1 Feb 1893 in Alabama, United States. Her parents were Jordan McGowan and Annis (Smith) McGowan.
In the 1900 census Sugar (age 7) was the single daughter of Jorden Mcgowin in Precinct 9 Clintonville, Coffee, Alabama, United States. She was living with her parents, paternal grandmother, and eight siblings.[1]
In the 1910 census Shug (age 16) was the single daughter of Jordan Mcgowin in New Brockton Ward 4, Coffee, Alabama, United States. She was enumerated with her parents and six siblings.[2]
Sug married Noah J Lampley (1879 - 1960), probably between 1918 and 1920 (see research notes below).
In the 1920 census Annie (age 28) was the wife of Noah Lambley in Clintonville, Coffee, Alabama, United States. Also in the same household was a nephew, James McGowan (1908 - ?).[3]
In the 1930 census Sugar (age 38) was the wife of Noah Lampley in New Brockton, Coffee, Alabama, United States. Enumerated with them were their daughter Versie L, and two sons from Noah's first marriage, Kalib and Johnie.[4]
In the 1940 census Sug (age 52) was the wife of Noah Lampley in New Brockton, Coffee, Alabama, United States.[5]
Sug died on 5 Oct 1984 aged 91.[6] She is buried in Hardshell Cemetery, New Brockton, Coffee, Alabama, United States.[7]
Aunt Sug was a licensed midwife and nurse for over 30 years in Alabama... she worked with prominent physicians in Coffee County, Alabama and was reported to have personally delivered over 300 babies during her career... Addressed lovingly as 'Aunt Sug' or ' Strawberry Sug' or 'Sugarfoot'... she was well-known and a highly respected member of her church and community..."
Research Notes
A birth date of "1 Feb 1888" is widely published, including on her grave marker, but I have taken her birth year from the earliest available source, the 1900 census. Her marriage date is estimated from Noah's 1918 draft card,[9] which cites Alvin Lampley as his nearest relative, and their appearance together on the 1920 census. -- Ambar Diaz, 5 Dec 2021
