Biography

Francis, son of Bernard McGrath and Bridget McCallum, was born c.1821 in County Tyrone, and emigrated with his family to New South Wales aboard the Crescent in 1840.[1][2][3]

He died in 1910 in Jinglemoney.[2][3] A newspaper obituary gives :

OBITUARY. Another very old resident of the Braidwood district in the person of Mr Francis McGrath, of Ginglemoney, passed away on Saturday last at the ripe age of 91 years. Born in 1819 in Tyrone, Ireland, he left his native heath for Sydney in 1837. Four years later he came to Braidwood district, having previously married. His wife died some seven years ago. He first worked at Charleyong for the munificent wage of £13 per annum and two rations (two 10-10-2¼). Subsequently he settled down at Jinglemoney, where he succeeded in getting together a very comfortable homestead, on which he reared a family of nine - six daughters and three sons. Of these only one, Mr F. McGrath, junr., is living. He has lived with him from birth, and during the past six years, when he has been practically helpless, has with his sisters managed the place and looked after his father's comfort. His daughters are Mesdames Shelley, McCarron, R. French, T. Feeney and Messrs M A. McGrath and Margaret McGrath. The deceased gentleman was a most persevering man, and always bore the reputation of being as straight as the proverbial die. At any rate there was no man more respected by those who knew him best than he was. [2]

Research Notes

The obituary records that he was born in 1819, and arrived in NSW in 1837. No record is located for the arrival of Francis McGrath in the period 1835-1839, and it is assumed that the details provided in the obituary are in error.
