Jeremiah was born in 1809 in Drumbane, County Tipperary, Ireland. His father was a farmer, Patrick McGrath, his mother Johanna McGrath nee Ryan. He married Ellen Maher at Upperchurch in February 1840. He arrived in Victoria in September 1852 with Ellen and their children as assisted migrants aboard the Bourneuf from Liverpool. The family went to the Ballarat goldfields where he dug for gold. He later took up a farm in Warrenheip. He died of cancer in August 1875. He is buried in the Old Ballarat Cemetery.

FUNERAL NOTICE.— The Friends at the late Mr JEREMIAH M'GRATH are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, the Ballarat Old Cemetery. The funeral procession will move from his late residence, near Coghlan's brewery, Warrenheip, This Day (Monday, the 23rd instant), at One o'clock pm.
