Dison McGregor was born 25 February 1812 in Hopkins County, Kentucky.[1][2] In 1810, his father "William McGriger" was enumerated in the census as head of household in Madisonville, Hopkins, Kentucky, which implies that Dison was born in that community.[3] His surname appears as both McGregor and McGrigor in various records. The name on his tombstone is "Dison McGreger". See Surname paragraph below. He was raised in Hopkins County but spent most of his adult life in Caldwell County, Kentucky, where he was a farmer.[4][5][6]
He was married 18 October 1832 in Caldwell County to Margaret Goodacre. [1][7] They were the parents of twelve known children, all born in Caldwell County, Kentucky. According to the referenced McGregor book, by author Ora, the information came from "the family Bible in the possession of grandchildren Rose Ellen, Charlie and Virgil Blackburn."
Dison died 26 January 1888 in Caldwell County and was buried at Goodaker-Gregor Cemetery in Lewistown, Caldwell County, Kentucky [1][2]
Dison died intestate and on 16 April 1888 the Hopkins County Court appointed his son John McGregor as administrator of his estate.[11]

"Between 1807 and 1809 William McGregor Sr., born ca. 1772, who came from Scotland at age nine with his mother Molly to Charleston, SC, came to Hopkins Co. to find land to settle on. He settled around "Old Lick Creek" near Charleston. He and son Samuel gave a section of the land for the church to be built on. About 1811, he returned to Charleston for his family to remove to Hopkins Co. between 1812 and 1818. He joined the church ca. 1826, died 1833. He and a man on the street got into an argument. He went to court and was fined $1.00 for saying a "swear" word. He is probably buried at Old Lick Creek. His wife was believed to be Amelia Clark. Their children were: John (1796-1863); Samuel (1798-1851); William Jr. (1799-1889); James (1804-1865); Moses (1805-1860); Levi (born ca. 1807); Mary (Polly) (1809-1865) and Dison (1812-1888)."
Surname
From page 295 of "The Tradewater River Country in Western Kentucky," [13]
"The McGregor family is a large connection in Hopkins and other counties thereabout. It shows a most glaring instance of changes in the family name of people of the same blood. Those who came into the Tradewater country early in the 19th century were brothers, but the families sprung from them spell the name as variously as McGregor, McGrigor, McGrigg, Macgregor, Grigg, Grig, with oneg, 2 gs, 1 r or 2 rs as the case may be. They all know this but seem not to care, just say, “yes, they are all kin,” and let it go at that."
Research Notes
Some researchers believe his mother was Amelia Clark as indicated above, while others believe it was Mary Wylie.
Dyson A. McGregor served in Union cavalry unit as a sergeant during the American Civil War. This was most likely his nephew and not this Dison.
