Biography

Elder William McGregor was born 16 March 1799 in South Carolina, United States. He was the son of William McGregor. Various researchers show that his father William married Mary Wylie and/or Amelia Clark, but documentation is lacking for both. However, as documented in the Heritage of Hopkins County, Kentucky, a few descendants believe Amelia Clark was his wife and the mother of their eight children.

William was married 26 June 1820 in Hopkins County, Kentucky to Elizabeth Waid.[1]

Their first 7 children: Rebecca, William Cazy, James Monroe, Levi Bartlett, Elizabeth, Dyson Addison and Mary A. (Polly) were born in Hopkins County, Kentucky. Then they moved to Marshall County, Kentucky, where the last 3 children, Henry Preston, Ursula Jane and Permelia Ann were born.[1]

Elder William was an old Primitive Baptist Preacher and helped to organize Middle Fork Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Marshall County, Kentucky in 1842.[2]

Willliam McGregor died 9 December 1880, and was buried at Gibson Cemetery, Benton, Marshall County, Kentucky. [3]

"Between 1807 and 1809 William McGregor Sr., born ca. 1772, who came from Scotland at age nine with his mother Molly to Charleston, SC, came to Hopkins Co. to find land to settle on. He settled around "Old Lick Creek" near Charleston. He and son Samuel gave a section of the land for the church to be built on. About 1811, he returned to Charleston for his family to remove to Hopkins Co. between 1812 and 1818. He joined the church ca. 1826, died 1833. He and a man on the street got into an argument. He went to court and was fined $1.00 for saying a "swear" word. He is probably buried at Old Lick Creek. His wife was believed to be Amelia Clark. Their children were: John (1796-1863); Samuel (1798-1851); William Jr. (1799-1889); James (1804-1865); Moses (1805-1860); Levi (born ca. 1807); Mary (Polly) (1809-1865) and Dison (1812-1888)."

McGregor-672 and McGregor-260 appear to represent the same person because: Same person
McGregor-673 and McGregor-260 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year, spouse; both Elizabeths are mother of Henly Preston McGregor.

Thanks
