"Duncan Ban McGrigor" was born c1690-c1698 in Scotland. (Duncan's second name "Ban" translates to English from Gaelic as White, Fair).

There is a slight possibility, that "Duncan Ban McGrigor" and "Duncan McGrigor" were two different men from the same village/family, both with wives named Margaret and sons named John; however, the surname "Ban" which translates to "White" was also used by MacGregors during the era of proscription. A dual translation is also "Fair" - a clever pushback against misaligned allegations of treachery against the MacGregor clan resulting in the banishment of the MacGregor surname and discrimination against those who carried it forward. Therefore, the two names likely belonged to the same person, and are set as one person in this profile based on current findings regarding related McGrigor families of Balquhidder.
