MR. EDWARD JAMES McGREGOR OF ULMARRA.
ULMARRA, Friday.
The death occurred after a long illness of Mr. Edward James MGregor, of Ulmarra, at the Grafton District Hospital, on Thursday night, at the age of 74 years.
Deceased was born on the Coldstream in 1866. He was the son of Dougal McGregor, who came to the Clarence River from the Lower Hunter with the very early agricultural settlers. In the year 1892 he married Miss Euphemia McCallum, daughter of the late James McCallum, and with the exception of nine years spent at Ryde, deceased lived all his life on the Clarence River. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, also a Justice of the Peace, and he took a very active part in public affairs. He was largely instrumental in having the Briner bridge built over the Coldstream River and later in having the rural electrical line extended to the Coldstream.
Deceased is survived by his widow and three sons, Roy and Cecil, of Sydney, and Stuart, of the Coldstream, and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral left the Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon, for the Ulmarra cemetery, where Rev. A. Campbell Begbie conducted a most impressive service, during which he delivered a eulogistic address, saying that the deceased had shown most outstanding fortitude in the later stages of his severe illness, the last three months of which were spent in the Grafton District Hospital.[3]
