Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Washington McGriff is a part of US Black heritage.

Husband of Lucy (maiden name unknown).

Husband of Edna Sims.

Maternal grandfather of baseball great Jackie Robinson.

His parents are unknown but some of his siblings were [1]:

  1. Cora McGriff + Samuel Wade
  2. Paul McGriff
  3. Eliza McGriff + Jerry Walden, Jr.

His sister Eliza McGRIFF married Jerry Walden, Jr., her former teacher of the black school near Beachton. He was a Morehouse College graduate whose family owned several hundred acres of land. The Waldens donated the land where the Evergreen Congregational Church in Beachton was built. The Waldens were related to Richard Hadley who owned 400 acres by the 1870s. [2]

After about 2 years in Pasadena, California, Washington's daughter Mallie (McGriff) Robinson pooled her money with her aunt Cora (McGriff) and Sam Wade and bought a house on Pepper Street in an all-white block. Though they were in a working class district in 1922, the black migrants from rural Georgia now owned land in the wealthiest city in America. In 1924 the Wades sold their share to Mallie and moved into their own home a few blocks away. [2]
