Biography
Robert McGuire was born in 1828. He was the son of Daniel McGuire and Ann Reid. His father was a coal miner but died sometime before the 1841 census.
in 1841 his mother Ann Reid was recorded as a widow living at the Shotts Iron Works, and her four of the five children - Rachel, James, William, and Robert - were working in the mine as coal drawers, carting coal from the mine up to the surface through tunnels.[1]
In 1851 Robert (age 22) was living at 29 Flat Row, Shotts Iron Works, and working as a coal miner. His mother Ann Reid (56) and brother John (20) were also present.[2]
