Biography

Rachel McGuire was born about 1797. She was the daughter of William McGuire and Mary Fletcher. There is some uncertainty regarding Rachel's place of birth. Her father is recorded in Lee County, VA in 1795-1797, is absent in 1798-1799 and then returns in 1800-1806. Since some of his children report their birth places as Cocke Co., TN, it is possible William may have been moving back and forth between Lee Co., VA and TN.

Rachel married Nehemiah ODell in 1821, very soon after Rachel's sister and Nehemiah's first wife, Nancy McGuire, died. In addition to the one son, Thomas ODell, born to Nancy McGuire, Nehemiah was also the father of several children by Rachel. The following are thought to be children of Nehemiah and Rachel, all born in Ray Co.:

From the list above, family ties between ODell and McGuire were close. David A. McGuire was the son of John McGuire (Rachel's brother) and Nancy Wheat. Samuel Jasper McGuire was the son of Francis McGuire (Rachel's brother) and Rebecca Jane Tarwater. Samuel McGuire was the son of Squire McGuire (Rachel's brother) and Susan Rowland. And John McGuire was the son of Squire McGuire (Rachel's brother) and Susan Rowland.

Rachel McGuire Odell died after 1880 in Missouri.
